What Is Liver Cirrhosis?

Liver cirrhosis is a chronic and progressive liver disorder in which healthy liver tissue is gradually replaced by scar tissue (fibrosis), leading to impaired liver function over time. The liver plays an essential role in detoxification, metabolism, digestion, and nutrient storage and extensive scarring can interfere with these vital functions. Cirrhosis may develop due to long-term liver damage caused by conditions such as chronic hepatitis B or C infection, excessive alcohol consumption, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), autoimmune liver diseases, metabolic disorders, or prolonged inflammation. In early stages, liver cirrhosis may produce few symptoms, but advanced disease can result in serious complications affecting multiple organs and overall health.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms of liver cirrhosis can vary depending on the severity and progression of liver damage. Common symptoms include: chronic fatigue and weakness; loss of appetite and unintended weight loss; nausea or digestive discomfort; abdominal swelling (ascites) caused by fluid accumulation; swelling in the legs and ankles; jaundice — yellowing of the skin and eyes due to impaired bilirubin processing; itching of the skin; easy bruising or bleeding; muscle wasting; confusion, memory problems, or difficulty concentrating associated with hepatic encephalopathy; dark urine and pale stools; and in advanced stages, complications such as portal hypertension, variceal bleeding, and increased susceptibility to infections.

Research & Treatment Development

Research into liver cirrhosis continues to advance with the aim of slowing liver damage progression, managing complications, supporting liver function, and improving patient quality of life. Current medical approaches include: treatment of underlying liver conditions such as viral hepatitis or fatty liver disease; nutritional and lifestyle management; alcohol cessation support where applicable; medications to control complications related to portal hypertension and fluid retention; monitoring for liver cancer and disease progression; minimally invasive procedures for selected complications; supportive rehabilitation and metabolic management strategies; and ongoing research exploring antifibrotic therapies, liver health science, biologic research, and personalised supportive care approaches. Liver transplantation may be considered in advanced cases — our focus is on supporting patients to avoid or delay reaching that stage.
